Just like in California, surfing remains a favorite pastime in Florida, but people still flock to the same old beach breaks. How about something new, something that hasn’t really been used by a lot of people?
Consider the Pumphouse, a new beach break situated halfway between Sandpiper Cove and Two by Fours. It was essentially created inadvertently by a pipe that flushes the Destin Harbor with clean Gulf Water.
Pumphouse is a winter break that works best on a low to incoming tide and a northeast groundswell. These waves are simply gorgeous – big outside, hollow inside. Size averages around 4 to 10 ft. . The season begins in August and lasts through until the end May. While this area is deserted in the summer, expect it to be absolutely packed when the wave is on.
You can find Pumphouse right after you drive by Sandpiper Cove; simply park along the road, if you dare. Walk to the beach and look for a buoy located 250 yards out in the ocean; this is where the pipe is pushing out the water. The town of Destin is generally a pretty expensive area, but shop around for the best deals for hotels and places to eat. When not on the water, consider joining the many fishermen who are taking advantage of Destin’s access to the Gulf
It’ll be like Lord of the Flies when trying to get a piece of the Pumphouse’s epic waves – be fearless.
